Amazon has announced expansion of its same-day grocery delivery service to 50 additional markets while simultaneously opening 12 new Amazon Fresh stores in suburban locations targeting the grocery shopping segments its online channel has been unable to fully capture. The grocery expansion is central to Amazon's strategy for increasing Prime membership value and driving incremental purchases from existing customers.
Walmart has responded by accelerating its own grocery delivery capabilities, leveraging its existing store footprint to offer faster fulfillment than Amazon can achieve from dedicated fulfillment centers in most markets. The battle between the two largest US retailers for grocery market share is intensifying competition in the sector while putting significant pressure on traditional grocery chains whose digital capabilities lag both giants.
